: After reading Chapter 1 of Into the Wild, consider your first impression of Christopher McCandless. Based solely on the events and details presented in this opening chapter, do you believe McCandless truly understood the risks he was taking when he entered the Alaskan wilderness? Why or why not?

Prompt Response: Based on the first chapter that we read I truly believed that Chris McCandless understood the risk that he was taking.Chris McCandless is a educated man who went to Emory. In the first chapter when the man offered him food he decllined. This shows how he is knowingly rejecting help and that anyone with a education would understand that he is offering because it is so challenging. Also Alex states that he does not care about government rules when it comes to him having no hunter license which shows his desire to live abnormally even if he is at risk with only a small rifle. It shows he was there for the journey and the unpredictable series of events.

Summary: During the class period we started reading the book,"Into the Wild" as a class. We read the first chatper as well as talked about some context beforehand. We dicussed the differences between hitch hiking and other forms of hiking. We also talked about what each of us would bring while hiking and whether it would be needed.

Reflection: The story so far is very interesting as this man went alone hitch hiking all the way from Atlanta to Alaska. I am curious to find out more about his reasons to why he did this. Knowing that he graduated from Emory and came from a well standing family shows how he craved for a abnormal life to what we live as the norm. I wonder if he went on this trip because he did not want to be apart of what the world was doing.

In “A Rose for Emily,” Miss Emily’s actions shock the reader—she kills her fiancé and keeps his body in her home for years. People often react with disbelief when they hear about real-life stories that seem just as unbelievable. Write about the most shocking or “craziest” news story you have ever heard. What happened, and why did it stand out to you? How did people react to it, and what does it reveal about human behavior?

Describe a time when someone’s words had a lasting impact on you.
